King Jehu was succeeded by his son Jehoachaz under whose rule the Northern Kingdom of Israel was experiencing crushing defeats from King Hazael from Aram. Jehoahaz's son, Joash delivered the Northern Kingdom from Aram’s overbearing oppression.

Joash the son of Jehoahaz became king over Israel in Samaria…”

The Tell al-Rimah Stele, circa 797 BCE, found in northern Iraq boasts how the Assyrian ruler Adad-Nirari III subdued the lands of Amurru (Aram) and Hatti and how he imposed tax and tribute.

Listed among the kings providing tribute is the Israelite king Joash:
