Several hundred Aramaic papyri and ostraca dating back to the 5th century BCE were discovered in Elephantine between 1893 and 1910.

The documents reveal a presence of a Jewish military colony on the Island of Elephantine serving as mercenaries for the Persians. The Island, then called Yeb, is located near the Aswan Dam in Egypt. According to the content of the documents the community was established long before Persian rule.
