King Hezekiah Prepares to Battle the Sennacherib
The Assyrian conquest of the Northern Kingdom of Israel led refugees to flee to Jerusalem and build homes on the outskirts of the city. Along with building the tunnel to divert the water, King Hezekiah of Judah prepared for the coming Assyrians by fortifying the wall of Jerusalem and building the Broad Wall to include and protect the expanding city.
Isaiah recorded in verse 22:10:
[Hezekiah] counted the houses of Jerusalem and tore them down to strengthen the wall.
In the 1970s, the Broad Wall was unearthed by Israeli archaeologist Nahman Avigad. A section can be viewed today in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City.
