Horvat Susiya Synagogue in the South Hebron Hills - “Peace on Israel”

Read while you listen

Part of a small number of synagogues in Judea, the Susiya Synagogue dates from the 4th century and was in use until the 9th century, when the Muslims converted it into a mosque.

A floor mosaic with a Hebrew inscription dating to a later period of the synagogue reads: "Remembered for good, the sanctity of my master and Rabbi, Isai the Cohen (priest), the respected, the son of Rabbi who has donated this mosaic and plastered its walls with lime, which he promised at the feast of Rabbi Yohanan the Cohen, the venerable scribe, his son. Peace upon Israel. Amen
