The Bar Kokhba Revolt to Re-establish Israel
With a pagan temple in their midst and the essence of Judaism once again threatened, the Jews reached their limit, and their outrage led to probably the most significant revolt in Roman history. Led by Shimon Bar Kokhba, the army fought a guerilla war, hiding out in caves. Archaeology unearthed some of their belongings, including knives, shoes, and pottery, with the most significant find being Bar Kokhba's letters in the Cave of Letters at Nahal Hever. The letters are, for the most part, military dispatches, and they confirm the historicity of the revolt while casting light on the nature of the administration of Judea by the rebels.
