Magdala Synagogue in the Galilee

50 BCE-100 CE

Read while you listen

Another ancient synagogue that was also active during the Second Temple Period was discovered in the ancient city of Migdal or Magdala. As in other ancient synagogues, it had stone benches built against elaborately decorated walls, coloured frescos, and a mosaic floor. In the middle of the synagogue was what is known today as the Magdala stone, a carved stone with a relief showing a seven-branched menorah flanked by a pair of two-handled jugs and a pair of columns, the likes of which have never been seen before in archaeology.

The synagogue attests to the extensive Jewish settlement in the northern region at the time of the Temple as well as after the Destruction.
