Synagogues during the Byzantine period were influenced by Christian church architecture. Though not universally present, many synagogues had a chancel screen, which separated the bima (where the Torah was read) from the rest of the hall. It consisted of square colonnettes interspersed with carved slabs.
In this picture is a marble chancel screen from a 5th-century synagogue in Hammat Gader in the Golan. The screen has a universally used carved border with a blossom motif and menorah inside a laurel wreath.
