Community in Akko Rav Saadia Gaon’s Commentary on Isaiah
The oldest evidence of a community in Acre or Akko is from a commentary on Isaiah by Rabbi Saadia Gaon.
Rabbi Saadia Gaon was one of the greatest Jewish legal and philosophical minds of the period.
It is written that Josiah ben Aaron, the Av, or head of the court in Akko, purchased the document in the Hebrew year 4791 or 1031 CE.
Research ascribes some of the missing content in the manuscript to tears. The script reads:
"Yeshiva Tzvi is … in the measure of the narrowness of the place, may he merit to contemplate …and understand and instruct in the fear of G-d and teach law [and] justice according to Torah and according to Halacha ..."
