A colophon to a commentary on the Shemoneh Esre prayer by Rabbi Saadia Gaon, copied in Ashkelon in 1061 CE by Azariah Ben David, has been preserved in the Cairo Geniza.
The Shemoneh Esre, also known as the Amidah, is a central Jewish prayer recited while standing and said three times a day.
