Letter mentioning Community in Rafiah (Rafah)
The Cairo Geniza and other sources provide detailed evidence of a strong Jewish community in Rafiah (or Rafah in Arabic).
A letter dated to 1020 CE, written in Judeo-Arabic with an opening in Hebrew, is addressed to Solomon ben Saʿadya and the community of Rafiaḥ; it mentions a dispute over an inheritance that drove the losing party to appeal to a Muslim court.
