Jerusalem: The Final Battle and the Destruction of the Second Temple

70 CE
Read while you listen

Fierce battles continued for another three months. On the 17th of Tammuz, the Romans took the Antonia fortress adjacent to the Temple. The Temple service and offerings ceased, and bloody battles ensued in the Temple courtyards. In a final attempt to save the Temple, all the surviving citizens of Jerusalem joined the fight, blocking the Roman soldiers with their bodies. Life without the Temple wasn't an option.

Five months after the Romans started their attack on Jerusalem, they finally set the Temple on fire on the 9th of Av. In Jewish tradition, the three weeks between the 17th of Tammuz and the 9th of Av are called "between the straits." 2,700 years after the destruction of the First Temple and 2,000 years after that of the Second, the Jews still mourn its destruction on the 9th of Av to this day.
