Masada’s Synagogue
Archaeologists excavating Masada in the 1960s uncovered a synagogue that was used by the Sicarii during the revolt. It became the last Jewish stronghold after Jerusalem’s destruction. The synagogue was probably built when Herod converted Masada into a palace retreat around 31 BCE.
Two shallow pits sunk into the floor of the synagogue contained scrolls of the Book of Deuteronomy and Ezekiel.
