Yosef Karo Arrives in Tsfat (Safed)
Born in Toledo, Spain, in 1488, Rabbi Yosef Karo and his family wandered between countries and cities after the expulsion. He ultimately made his way via Egypt to Israel, settling in Tsfat in 1536. There, he established a yeshiva and became the leader of the Beit Din (Rabbinic Court).
He is best known for his rabbinic work, the Shulchan Aruch, often called the “Code of Jewish Law”—a clear, well-organized, and practical synthesis of Jewish legal tradition that became the most authoritative and widely consulted halachic code.
His work, Maggid Meisharim, reflects his deep involvement in Kabbalah and stands as a testament to his spiritual stature among the kabbalistic authorities of his generation.
